Before tasking a student with a logo, there are a few things that you could think about.

  • Collect logos you both like and dislike.
  • Make a list of colours you both like and dislike.
  • Make a list of the fonts you both like and dislike.
  • Your logo may be printed off by your customers in black & white so check that it translates well into black & white.
  • Do you want a background colour?
  • Have an idea of the size you want the logo to be.
  • Bear in mind that one logo size may not be suitable for all your requirements. Is the logo for business cards? Letterhead? Website? Invoices? You may need to arrange to have it sized differently depending on what it is to be used for.
  • If you do need different versions, you will probably have to pay more.
  • Do you want it hand drawn or hand written?
  • Do you want it computer aided?
  • What impression are you trying to convey to your customers?
  • Check whether you will receive a pdf or jpg file.
  • Check with your printers how they want to receive the logo.
  • Ask what the RGB/CMYK numbers are of the colours.
  • Make sure you own the logo but the student has rights to use it in his/her portfolio.
  • Fully establish what you are getting for the commission.
  • Set a time limit.
