- How much does it cost to use StudentGems?
Students and Graduates: The site is completely free to use.
Employers: Registration on StudentGems is free and you can browse the student profiles to see who may be available to do your job. Direct contact with students is only available to those employers who have a current posted job. To post a job costs £14.95. There is no further payment to StudentGems, we are not an agency and do not charge any commission! Further details of how the site works can be found on our how it works page.
- Now I have graduated can I still use StudentGems?
Yes, you can be a 'StudentGem' for up to 3 years after you graduate. If you no longer have access to your uni email address to verify your status contact us.
- How do I know what to charge?
Do some research and find out what the cost would be for a fully qualified or experienced person to carry out the task. Take into account how long you have been studying, how knowledgeable you think you are, which part of the country you are in. Make your charge appealing to businesses and private individuals. If you charge too close to the qualifying rate you may not get the business. A rough guideline would be around half the going rate. Negotiate; get a fair price for a fair job.
- How do I know how much to pay?

- Do I have to pay students/graduates?
Posted job and internships must comply with all current employment legislation provisions including the national minimum wage.
For a role to be unpaid or expenses only, the student/graduate/intern must be under no obligation to perform work or carry out instructions: they have no contract or formal arrangement and so can come and go as they please; they have no expectation of and do not receive any reward for the work they do. - What happens if I don't get paid?
Firstly make sure that you have completed your assignment fairly and squarely, as agreed and within the timeframe. If you have and have not received the money owed to you after repeated contact attempts, there are some courses of action that you can take:

Discuss why it is not satisfactory and see if it can be rectified. Remember students are just begining to gain commercial experience and may need extra help and guidance
- What sort of jobs can I post?
We accept paid jobs and voluntary jobs for Registered Charities. We also accept unpaid jobs and commission-only jobs where these offer a genuine opportunity for a student or graduate to enhance their CV. For further details have a look at our Job Posting Rules.
- Can I offer a service when I am not qualified?
Yes and no. There are some services which are prohibited.
Yes, if you are competent in what you are offering. A music student can offer music lessons, a catering student can offer catering, a good cricketer could offer cricket coaching, a medical student who speaks another language fluently can interpret, coach or translate etc.
No, if what you want to offer is illegal, or requires you to register with a governing body in order to practise (unless you are a member), or which require a certificate or licence before the services can be provided to the public (unless you have that licence or certificate.)
- I am being bugged by someone on StudentGems. How do I get rid of them?
Completely ignore them and then contact us. If you are being threatened then you must contact the authorities. If you feel threatened, please read the safety tips
- How can I report abuse to StudentGems?
We want to know if you encounter any difficulties or unwanted attention so please contact us.
- How do I leave feedback?
Log on and click on 'Leave feedback' in the top menu bar. Alternatively, go to My account on the top menu bar and click on the 'Leave feedback' link.
- Does StudentGems provide any insurance cover for me?
No. You need to make any necessary insurance arrangements.
- How do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe from StudentGems permanently, please log in and go to 'My Account' where there is an 'Unsubscribe' request form.
- How do I create my profile page?
Once you have registered you will have a basic profile page. Click on My profile on the top menu bar to see what it looks like. If you want to change it or add to it click on the edit button. The more information you give and the more interesting you make it, the greater your chance of finding jobs.
- Why has my profile disappeared?
There are a number of reasons why your profile may have disappeared. Please contact us with your details and we will look into it.
- How can I change/add details to my profile page?
Once logged-in, click on My profile on the top menu bar to see what it looks like. If you want to change it or add to it click on the edit button. The more information you give and the more interesting you make it, the greater your chance of finding succesful matches.
- How can I change my registration details?
Once logged-in, you can change any of your registration details apart from your username by going to My account on the top menu bar.
- I suspect someone else has accessed my StudentGems account. What should I do?
Firstly change your password immediately by going to My account on the top menu bar and clicking on My account settings. Contact us with details of the problem and we will investigate. Never give your password out to anyone else.
- Why does my profile page look different from the last time I saw it?
We may have updated the site while you were gone. If you suspect that someone else has accessed your account you should contact us.
- How do I upload/change an image, audio or video file?
Go to 'Create/Edit my profile' and follow the instructions in the 'My media' section.
